One night at The Ludlow on the Lower East Side in mid-November. Work trip. Quick in-and-out.
The Ludlow is on Ludlow Street between Stanton and Rivington, which puts you in the heart of the LES. The hotel is boutique in the real sense: small, designed, with a personality that extends from the lobby (dark wood, leather, a DJ booth that runs on weekends) to the rooms (exposed brick, Smeg mini-fridges, record players with a vinyl collection). It's the kind of hotel that would be annoying if it tried too hard, but it doesn't. It just is what it is, and what it is matches the neighborhood.
The room was small, which is standard for the LES and standard for boutique hotels in New York. But the bed was good and the street noise at night on Ludlow Street is its own kind of white noise: music from the bars below, people talking on the sidewalk, the occasional group laughing too loudly, a siren in the distance. You either love LES energy or you don't. I do.
I had dinner at Dirty French at the Ludlow Hotel, which is the restaurant on the ground floor. French bistro food through a downtown New York lens: raw bar, steak frites, duck a l'orange that's been deconstructed and rebuilt in a way that works. I sat at the bar because it was a solo night and the bar at Dirty French is one of the better solo dining spots in downtown Manhattan. The bartender made an old fashioned that was exactly right, and the steak was cooked the way I asked, which shouldn't be noteworthy but often is.
After dinner I walked. The LES at night in November is cold and alive. Rivington Street, Orchard Street, past the old tenement buildings and the new cocktail bars that have replaced the bodegas. The neighborhood has changed since I first started coming here, which is what every person says about every neighborhood in New York at all times. Change is the city's factory setting. I walked for about 30 minutes, hands in pockets, no destination, and ended up at Katz's on Houston Street at 10 PM because the neon sign was on and I was cold and a hot pastrami sandwich at Katz's at 10 PM is never the wrong decision.
Flew home the next morning. One night. The Ludlow remembers what New York used to feel like while still living in what it's become.
