G went back to London in mid-July. Two nights this time. Family again, but she also wanted to stay somewhere she'd been wanting to try, so she booked The Ned in the City of London.
The Ned is a members' club and hotel inside a former Midland Bank building on Poultry Street, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1924. The main banking hall is one of the most impressive interior spaces in London: thousands of square meters of open floor with columns rising to a vaulted ceiling covered in hand-painted plasterwork. The original bank counters and wood paneling are still there. The room is now a restaurant and bar, and walking through it for the first time makes you feel like you've accidentally entered something you're not supposed to see. The scale is hard to describe. You know those buildings where the architecture is the attraction? The Ned is that building, and you also happen to sleep there.
The rooms are Art Deco throughout. Custom furniture, deep freestanding bathtubs in some categories, vintage-style phones, and minibars curated with more thought than most hotel restaurants put into their actual menus. The beds are excellent. The linens are heavy. The blackout curtains work. Request a room on a higher floor in the east wing if you want morning light over the City skyline. The rooftop pool and terrace have a view that includes St. Paul's Cathedral close enough that it feels like part of the hotel. The rooftop is restricted to members and hotel guests, which keeps it from becoming one of those London rooftop bars where everyone is taking photos and nobody is having a conversation.
The Ned has nine restaurants inside the building, which sounds like too many and sort of is, but the variety means you never need to leave if you don't feel like it. Cecconi's does reliable Italian: the tuna tartare and the crab spaghettini are both good. Kaia does Asian-influenced seafood with a wood grill and a menu that leans toward sharing plates. The robata-grilled prawns and the miso black cod are the orders. The downstairs bar is inside the actual bank vaults. The original vault doors are still in place, three feet thick, and you walk through them to get to a cocktail bar that feels like something out of a heist film. The drinks are strong and the bartenders know what they're doing. G sent me a video from inside the vault bar at midnight, panning from the three-foot-thick door to her cocktail, with a text that said "I live here now." She didn't. But I understood the impulse.
The location is in the City of London, which is the financial district, not the tourist center. This matters. The City empties out on weekends and evenings, which means the streets around the hotel are quiet after 6 PM on a Friday in a way that the West End or Soho never are. If you want to be in the middle of the action (theater, nightlife, shopping), stay in Mayfair or Soho. If you want a hotel that feels like its own world, and you don't mind being a short Tube ride from everything else, The Ned is worth it. Bank station is about a two-minute walk.
G's original plan was London for two nights, then on to Madrid. The Madrid leg got cancelled. Plans shift. So instead of rushing to a flight, she had an extra day in London with no agenda, which turned into time with her mom Iris and her sister Nora, a long walk through Hampstead Heath, and a slow lunch at Ottolenghi in Islington. Sometimes a cancelled plan is the best plan.
The City of London has a few things worth seeing that most people skip. Leadenhall Market was used as Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter films and the Victorian ironwork alone is worth the five-minute walk. Sky Garden on top of the Walkie-Talkie building is free (book a timed slot in advance) and the views are absurd. G spent the cancelled Madrid day up there with a cocktail, which is an objectively better use of time than sitting in Barajas Airport.
For food beyond The Ned's nine restaurants (which, yes, is an absurd number for one hotel), Hawksmoor Guildhall does the best steak in the City and Duck & Waffle on the 40th floor of Heron Tower is open 24 hours. The signature dish is exactly what it sounds like. It's better at midnight.
G flew back to Florida. Two nights in a bank vault turned members' club, a cancelled flight to Madrid that became an extra day with family, and a walk through Hampstead Heath in July light. The cancelled Madrid flight was probably the best thing that happened all trip.
